Euphorbia pulcherrima, Poinsettia, ©2000
The bright red tropical plant was brought to the United States from Mexico by Dr. Poinsett. It has become an American icon for Christmas decorating. The red bracts are really leaves and the flower is the middle yellow section. The stem needs to be singed with a candle to stop the milky sap from leaving the plant in arrangements. The original gouache painting is in the permanent collection of Longwood University, Farmville, VA, Virginia’s premier contemporary art collection. This illustration was used for the Christmas card of Longwood University December 2014. This Christmas Card image was mentioned and shown in April 2015 “Members News” in the Botanical Artist –A Journal of the American Society Of Botanical Artists (ASBA).
