Meet The Artist Judy Gilman - Botanical Illustration - Gilman Arts
A lifelong resident of the Richmond area, Judy Gilman-Hines was educated at St. Catherine’s School and Queens University of Charlotte, Charlotte, NC. After she raised her family of two sons and two daughters, gardening, art and travel become her passions. Regular trips abroad gave Mrs. Gilman subjects to paint and photograph. Each hobby helped the other.
In 1969, Mrs. Gilman began formal art lessons at The Tuckahoe Woman’s Club with teachers Nancy Witt, Barclay Sheaks, Ruth Ensign, Helen Van Wyk, Irene Perry and I-Huing Ju. She attended workshops at Nimrod Hall, in Bath County, VA, Helen Van Wyk in Rockport, MA, and Robert Benton in Gloucester, MA.
Mrs. Gilman studied in gouache, oil paint, pencil, pen, and printmaking but now works exclusively in watercolor. Her first botanical illustration classes were with Barbara Stewart, VA, and James Linton, VA, at her mountain home in Wintergreen. Master classes organized by Dr. Shirley Sherwood were with Katie Lee, New York, Jenny Phillips, Australia, Coral Guest, England and Margaret Saul, Australia. Her current teacher is Juliet Kirby of Williamsburg who teaches the advanced botanical artists at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond.
Mrs. Gilman has had one woman shows, and exhibits annually at The Tuckahoe Woman’s Club and around Virginia. Her work is in the permanent collections of Longwood University, Farmville, St. Catherine’s School, Richmond, and Queens University of Charlotte, Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Gilman is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists.
As a Parkinson’s patient, Mrs. Gilman must be extra careful drawing the subjects and handling the paint and flower materials. She hopes to continue to paint as long as possible.
