The bright red tropical plant was brought to the United States from Mexico by Dr. Poinsett. It has become an American icon for Christmas decorating. The red bracts are really leaves and the flower is the middle yellow section. The stem needs to be singed with a candle to stop the milky sap from leaving the plant in arrangements. The original gouache painting is in the permanent collection of Longwood University, Farmville, VA, Virginia’s premier contemporary art collection. This image was chosen by Longwood University for its Christmas Card 2014. It was mentioned in the April 2015 issue of the Botantical Artist, A Journal of American Society of Botanical Artists, under “Member News”.
